Discussion and Writing Topics for Younger Kids

1. What would your life be like if you lived two hundred years ago, like the lighthouse keeper’s daughter in the story?  What do you have now that she wouldn’t have had back then?
2.  Imagine what your life would be like two hundred years in the future.  What are some wild inventions that you’d like to have be real?
3.  Draw a picture and a map of your perfect island.  Be sure to include your house and your school!

Discussion and Writing Topics for Older Kids

1. The Island of Atlantis was a legendary kingdom that supposedly sank into the sea.  (See my author’s note)  Do you think it was a myth or a real place?  Do some research and write a persuasive argument.
Here are two websites to help you get started:
https://www.ancient.eu/atlantis/
https://www.history.com/topics/folklore/atlantis

2. Billingsgate Island, the setting for The Disappearing Island, is a real place that has been dramatically eroded by the sea in the past two hundred years.  What are some other places in the world that are currently endangered by climate change and rising seas?  What do you think are the best proposed solutions to deal with this?
